African violets will flower in a north facing window (I'm assuming you are in the northern hemisphere).

Impatiens do well. But they are hard to get this time of year.

oh, summerunshine. that is good to know. I have a northern window and I am trying to have an indoor garden. I didn't know a northern window was good for African violets. I'm going to try these. thanks

If you keep african violets in a north window, they have to be close to the window. Pretty much directly on the windowsill. Another thing you can do is get a grow light. A single gro light tube is enough to supplement the natural light coming in from the window. I have one for my AVs, and they bloom pretty much constantly.
