Safe for feeder-bath - seal?

I've read so much conflicting information! I had made a leaf mold from an elephant leaf, and plan to make another. But, I wanted to use them as a feeder, and water (for drinking and bathing for birds drink and bathe and squirrel & others to drink from). However, several sources say that the lime is toxic? I'm no concerned about putting the feed and water in the hypertufa leaves.

Any solid information on this? Also, what about a sealant that will work with hypertufa AND is safe for "consumption" in terms of coating a feeder/water trough/bath?

Thanks!

Wash the leaf several times with water. Use a hose , or soak in a tub of water. If you want seal with a clear cement sealer.
Birds drink water from roadside puddles and I assume do ok. I bet there are many chemicals in those puddles.
Washing the lime off the leaf wont be 100% but I beleive that the water bath will remove the majority. And the birds will appreciate the water.

It's fine. No sealer is necessary but it will retain water better with one.
