Tufa Well Re-visited!

You folks may remember this project I took on at my friend Janice's place last year. It is a cover for their well pipe. It was sticking up right in the middle of their parking area at their house. I made Janice the antique water vessel as a gift and it went so nicely with the well we made. It was supposed to imitate the well Jesus drank from when he spoke to the Samaritan woman.

We just used plain ole tufa and plain ole water for the mix. This was how the project looked as we finished it last year....

And this is how it looks THIS year after surviving one horrible 'ice age' winter. No apparent wear and tear from the freezing! They put crushed gravel on their drive way and have made some low stone walls... I really like the setting now!

I am pleased to see that tufa can indeed survive -40Âº C temps for weeks at a time! I really doubted that it would handle that abuse.

Oh yes, Marly! I remember both of those. It's really something special! I think perhaps that maybe the armature you used within it, helped through those winter months! Again, GREAT JOB!!!

I especially remember seeing the the antique water vessel before. Really unique for a tufa piece.

Hi Marly. Thanks for posting the after pictures. Nice to see they spruced up the area to do your piece justice. I have a similar situation and was wondering if the top is completely uncovered. We recently had a new well drilled the old one was very very shallow. So now we have an old plastic garbage can covering the pipe thingie that comes out of the ground. Adele

No wonder everyone likes tufa so much! This looks wonderful. This is a huge size. How heavy is it ? Can one person lift it or is it a 2 or 3 person job? Laura

Adele, these pics are for you to show you what we did to tufa the well. Yes, we left the pipe exposed inside. We just made sure that the well was higher than the pipe so that it was totally hidden.

Laura, ... ain't NOBODY going to lift this baby! They are hoping that it will never need to be serviced! The pipe section is accessable but if they ever have to dig, well, they are pretty sure that the well cover will end up being destroyed. It is a brand new well so they are hoping they will get a few years out of it. If we have to rebuild it afterwards, so be it. It only cost about $100 Cdn to do that project so we should be able to do it again but even faster than last year! Now that we understand all that was involved we will be able to work fast. But here's hoping that they will NEVER have to remove the well cover!
