Roots sticking to inside of pot!

Posted by beach4me 9 (My Page) on

I had to pull out and repot a plumeria in one of my hypertufa pots today. When I opened it I found many of the smaller roots had stuck to the sides of the container and broke off! Is there a solution for this which wouldn't impair the porous nature of hypertufa? Is this an issue only with certain kinds of plants? If so, which kinds are/are not vulnerable? I really want to put my favorite plant in my favorite container! Thanks for any help you can give me in sorting this out!

beach, All plants that I've put in to hypertufa containers root to the sides of the pots. I take a serrated knife and cut around the edge to remove plants.
I love plumeria. I have one that a friend gave me and have been lugging it in and out of the house for a couple of years now. I just leave it in it's container and put it in the basement. My friend takes her's out of the pots and stacks them like cord wood, looks so strange. Billie

Pulling or cutting those roots should not damage your plant. That is basically what you do every time you buy a plant from the nursery and repot it.

No I don't think so. It's happening because the pot IS porous. This happens with all unsealed, porous pots. A coating of a non-water soluble sealer should do the trick.
