I'm getting my hip replaced Tuesday

Heya everybody !! Old age has finally caught up with me . I haven't been able to do any kind of crafts for months because of the pain in my hip. That had me so depressed. I was ready to sell everything. I finally got tired of temporary fixes ( cortosine shots ) so as scary as it sounds -- I'm taking the plunge --- Feb 22 --- I'm getting a new hip !!!

( Yippee !! --- I think .....) LOL

I'm sure it's pretty common - but I have to admit .... it's alittle scary . I thought I'd pop in and ask if anyone can tell me what to expect after surgery . Have you had one ? I'd sure love some first hand information , rather than what I read on the internet :)

You can bet -- if I need a cane or crutches or a walker --- it's gonna be all decked out in artsy fartsy stuff ! LOL

I haven't had it done but several friends have. 1st 1 was very tall & fell in yard & it broke. She was finally found by neighbor. I was with her before & after at hospital. She had a little pain, thing you need to watch is when you get home with walker or crutches is to move your knees often so they don't "freeze up" it's miserable getting them unfrozen. Son's knee cap you could move all around-bad sign. So no matter how lousy you think you feel or if you want to stay in same position & just be comfortable remember your knees have to bend, drop legs off bed,sit in chair & move legs, etc. This is a no pain no gain deal so if you want full use back got to move those legs. There are few things you may not be able to do afterwards, she couldn't climb up a ladder, she is almost 6 ft tall. She would risk the ball coming out of the socket. She also was a quilter of the most beautiful quilts, she always sat on the floor quilting them before, after she tried it when I was with her & she couldn't get up finally was able to pull herself onto a recliner & then use arms of it to get up. Once it healed she never said anything about any pain & could do most things except what I mentioned. Being so tall she found getting out of regular bed was rough so she had a tall bed in guest room & moved in there & it had a post headboard so she would hold on to that. Most average height folks haven't had much trouble but I always remind them to keep the knees moving & bending. You should do fine, they have that surgery down really well. GF didn't have to use a cane. She went back to caring for foster babies. She broke it when she was about 60. It's best if you can have someone with you 1st week,or at least neighbor check in on you. All of those that had it done were glad. Good Luck & let us know how things are going!Jan

Good luck, Kathy! I have heard of folks who felt so much better after getting a joint replacement that they wondered why they waited so long. I hope your goes very well and you have a quick and relatively painless recovery. You will be in my prayers!

I haven't had a hip replacement but I know quite a few people who have. Without exception, they are all glad they had the surgery and said that any pain immediately following the surgery was less than the pain they had before the surgery. I hope this is will be true for you too. I do remember them following the doctors orders and doing recommended physical therapy and excersises. (DBF's 91 year old mother had hip surgery last year and is doing well.)

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I've never had one myself, but I too have friends who have had hip replacements and they are all glad that they did. My mom had both knees replaced at the same time and that was over 20 years ago....and they're still working just fine!

We'll be thinking about you and will keep you in our prayers!

    -Hey TMG,

My mother had a hip replacement. Best thing she ever did. I believe she was 78 at the time. Like everyone said you have to do your physical Therapy. Start slow and each day it will get easier and easier. Careful where you step and at first have someone with you. I believe mom stared out with crutches, threw them away afer a short period of time and then used a cane.

Very little pain (especially with these new drugs). You will never wear your new hip out. It's amazing what doctors can do these days.

Mom had her surgery back in 1982 or 83, the only thing she would have done differently would be to have done it about 10 years sooner.

You go girl! You know we will all be here rooting for you.

    Hugs, Chelcass

Tomorrow will be a week since surgery! Anyone heard how she is doing? Should be over the worst of the pain & just needing to go easy for awhile but keep moving. Don't know if they send folks to rehab there or not. Anyway hope she is home soon! We are thinking about you Kathy & praying for your full recovery!! Jan
