Bartering

I work in the office of an elementary school and, because we're getting closer to the end of the year, we are running low on some supplies. Our principal, a real hoot (in a good and funny way) decided to barter with the other elementary schools in our district. She emailed them with what we had a surplus of and what we needed and asked them, if they had something we needed, to give us a request from our surplus. Well, we got three boxes the next day in our courier. While we were packaging up their requests, I told them about the junk train. Well, they though that was really neat and my principal decided to use cut-outs of buses to label our packages and, instead of calling it a junk train, it's called the "Barter Bus." I just wanted to thank all of you for supporting our educational system! How cool is THAT?!

WOW! That is so awesome! I'm glad that our Junk Train made it's way into the education system in some way. I think it was a great way for your principle to get what you needed without spending money as well. Maybe other schools should try to do the same. Then maybe there would be less waste of things as well as money.

Sugar- That is so cool. Decades ago when everybody was in a similar economic boat neighbors would barter. "I'll give you 2 eggs if you've got a cup of flour". Our Garden forum does it with plants. I saw someone try it with craft items on the forum. Craigslist.com has a section for bartering.

It makes the world seem a little more neighborly.

That's such a great idea!! Too bad the bartering system fell out of fashion with so many...my DH and I have gotten a lot of cool stuff that way! And it's especially great that your school system is using it!! What a great lesson!
