Aren't you the lucky one...... I've had hens and chicks for at least the last 5 years and just last year one single flower bloomed, couldn't believe.

    Hello Friend:

That is beautiful. My love is chicks and hens. Started about 6 years ago and was bitten by the chicks. I changed mine up last night. Had all the same in each container. Why in my old age that it never occured to me put several types together. Looking at yours, I seemed to notice all the varieties, and mine looked rather bland with all the same. Thanks for inspiring me to change up.

Nancy, I wondered why it gave up the ghost. Do you have squirrels or chipmunks steal them? Wouldn't think they would be that tasty. LOL When I had them on the ground, they disappeared fast, but in a container it slows down the critters a little.

I bought the spider web hens and chicks this year, but I put them in my terrarium..they started growing up towards the light..so I took them out and planted them outside. They are still growing up, have no web on them, but they look like they are going to flower. Will take pics when they do. Also..what does happen after they flower? Thanks.

My sempervivum fuego flowered. I, too, never knew hens and chicks flowered. I just bought this particular plant this spring and have been amazed at its growth and this amazing spike of flowers.

I don't know how to put a photo into my post, so I've included a link to my photo album on Flickr.

Do all hens and chicks have the ability to flower? Do they flower every other season or just when the conditions are right? I'd love to see this plant continue to bloom each year.

Here is a link that might be useful: Photos of my sempervivum fuego

I also love hens and chicks. Its hard to find different types but I have been looking. I buy new ones when they come in at the nursery. I keep adding them to my collection. Some of mine have bloomed too but I haven't noticed them dying. I guess I will have to check that out(-: They are so fun to grow. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of yours Thanks for sharing(-:

I've had hen & chicks for years, and mother to, have NEVER seen one bloom, that is so neat! I bought a Strawberry Pot last year to move mine to, then life got in the way, now that I've seen yours, I really have to get them moved, and buy some other succulents as I intended!

    Thanks for the motivation.

Did you Gal's know you can use the juice from Hen's and Chicks on burns, like aloe? Just snip off a nice juicy leaf and apply the gel-like juice directly to the burn for instant relief.

Well save your money and don't waste it on that above nursery link. (North Hills Nursery)Geez got my order and they are so small. I got more semps and bigger semps off ebay for the same price I paid for three of these. Talk about disapointment.)-:

I too love the straw berry jar. I've always wanted one, wonder what I'm waiting for!
I gave away so many red and grey green (dozens, probably over 100) at a spring plant exchange cuz I had to dig up gardens for construction. Who knew they were so valuable, lol. The biggest red ones that I kept all bloomed (stress from moving?)so its a bit disappointing that I have mostly small ones now. But they grow fast and seem to love my garden. I totally lost my little hairy ones that have big beautiful flowers. I saw a mosaic made of different kinds/colors once. I might try that sometime.

Gorgeous Lovely Pot!! Deedlesmum, and anyone in zone 5a/5b, can you really overwinter the hens&chicks in a strawberry pot? And what do you do, place in the shed, bring to basement, or what please? I happen to have a beautiful rich-red glossy clay strawb. pot which I forgot all about, when i fell for some hens&chicks at the garden center this week, came home with "Royal Ruby" a deep red, & "Sunset" a green w/red edges. I grabbed that pot when i found it yrs ago 'el cheapo' radically reduced, as it had a chip (which plants will hide), and purchased portulaca for it this yr thinking i'd finally put it to some pretty use. But now I see your pot photo, OH man-o-man that's beautiful!! Thanks for sharing. So any experience out there on what to do with a strawberry pot with hens & chicks in zone 5? We got down to -19below this past winter, with a -34below wind chill, for way too long~ Thanks for any advice on wintering such pots if planted! (oh by way, they got me this yr too. No sooner did i get home with these 2, but what i found myself in awe at a dark chocolate brown variety at another shop... gorgeous! ..still wishing i had grabbed it, but most sempervirens aren't cold hardy, are they?) thx~

Most succulents bloom when they are stressed and/or crowded. My hummers love them....never go to the feeder.

I have a lot this year that I have not thinned out...if they are too crowded, the chicks can die off. Hen blooms and when it starts to die, I cut it off...my hens have not died that I remember.

How do you get the Hens&Chicks to grow out of the hole? Do you plant individual plants into the holes? What keeps the planting medium from falling/washing out. I have H&Cs but never attempted planting them in a strawberry pot. I LOVE the look.

Ok - my experience. They bloom and fall over and look ugly and die and if you leave the area alone you will think that someone sprinkled seeds all over the place. They come back and they come back strong and beautiful! I had about 30 plants until Mrs. Know didn't know and cultivated and planted other stuff where they were. They still emerge around the columbine (a wonderful plant) and will take over if I let it and I want them too. I have a host of different colors but think the silver is the prettiest.

Hens & chicks are very hardy cold weather plants. In fact, Wisconsin has a succulent green house up in the frozen tundra. Drool over the babies featured at the site below. You just have to be careful of the pot you keep outdoors in the winter. Terracotta and some ceramic/clay pots don't always survive our winters.

I've seen them in WI planted outside in a kind of built up rockgarden like setting on either side of someones driveway. (They really look nice planted in the crevices between the big rocks) They had snow and ice on them, didn't phase them one bit.

I fell in love with them. So many beautiful kinds. I ordered some and they were dead within a year here in FL. I may not have given them good enough drainage or maybe the summer is just too hot and humid. Would like to try them again one day.

What a gorgeous pot that is the op posted back in '06.

My daughter bought my sempervivum at Walmart for mothers day this year and it bloomed! I didn't know anything about this plant until I started reading about it. I love them! Hopefully the picture I posted will come through.

Nice pics! I haven't had time to notice if they die or not. Some of mine have bloomed but too busy taking care of mom, just water when needed. Emandi that is beautiful, so many flowers! I usually try to have them in more than 1 place so in case 1 dies I have others. Love the strawberry jar. I certainly would put a pipe full of holes down center as my clay strawberry pot is so compacted that I don't know how the plants are surviving. Some holes are empty because of it. I think you put holey pipe in & soil around it,add some clean sand to it & as you go up the pot put in the plants & from inside pot pat the soil around the plants & keep on going up to the top. Good Luck!! Jan

    You guys must try https://www.storesonlinepro.com/store/1818384/?sitecookie=8e6f069988792b3c5c0feff58737a10a

I'm sure some of you know them as being squaw mountain gardens..,not sure if this is just a branch or if they changed completely. I've ordered six times in two years and am always happy with my plants. Prices are $3.75 per named semp and $.40 per un-named cutting. I can also pay $3.60 for "growers choice" with name labels and get no less than 4 named semps...one each. The orders come in paper lunch sacks, bare root with a name tag inside, each order gets about 4-5 medium size semps. (1-2") and at Keats 3 of mine have always had chicks growing. I counted my pot of nouveau pastel just for a guide...I planted it two weeks ago right out of my bag and have 4 2" hens....one 1" and each hen has TONS of chicks. One side from my seat I can loosely count 19...so u get your money's worth.
I've bought from eBay....I usually pay $5 for ONE small semp and then shipping....or even if I'm lucky to get a $3.99 lot of four I still have higher shippig than cost of plant :/ smg has a $4.95 had leone charge and then ur ship pinch ages with size if order. My last order had 12 named semps...40 cuttings and 3 sedums. $7.40 shipping. So not bad.
