What to give a soldier

Dh's sister and her husband visited us last weekend from Kansas. Also their son, daughter in law and 1 yr old grandbaby boy. The son, our nephew, was just back from Iraq, and since our dfosterd's boyfriend is in the national guard and going to Afganistan in September, I asked him what would be a good gift.

This is what he suggested:

1. A good compact travel alarm clock

2. A Zing single blade knife (the army issues a zing with lots of stuff in it, but often he just wanted a knife and to not have to sort through all the stuff in the army one.)

3. Phone cards (saves time to have a card)

4. His father suggested good sunglasses, which he concurred with except they would have to be bomb proof.

We had a great time. So glad nephew made it back safely, and we got to hear his stories and see pictures, not to mention their adorable little son.

Silly string is a good gift for a soldier. They can spray it in door ways and if there's a trip wire for a bomb.the silly strings catches on it and they then know they can't go in till a squad that knows about bombs comes..

When I was a soldier, what I valued was "baby wipes".
Alot of times when I was "downrange" or "in the field" for 30 or more days without access to a bath....I found baby wipes to be invaluable!

Kathy, I'm glad you had a great visit and I truly appreciate your family - your nephew's service to our country and the rest of family for being a source of support and strength for him!

Who better to come up with cool and practical gifts than a bunch of junkers? Who would have though silly string would be such an awesome gift for a soldier? Great idea for a thread!
