My first totem and plate flowers

I've been a gluing maniac the past few days. put together my first plate flowers and my first totem. I plan on hanging my plate flowers on my trees - so need to figure out how I'm going to do that. Someone posted about using a piece of chain.

The flowers aren't crooked like they look in the photos - it's that I didn't take the photos straight on!

Love love the totem, especially the blue balls inside! Be careful if you leave it outside in freezing weather because water can collect in the plate. Too lovely to have them break!

Beautiful! I love the contrast with the peach colored plate with black & white otherwise. Makes it pop! Your totem is fabulous, love those balls & the blue
with clear glass. Needs protected area on covered porch in summer so plates don't collect water from rain or sprinklers. TFS Jan

Lovely totem! :)

I prefer the plates where you've used the black and white plates as they 'pop' more than the others, in my opinion.

Great work! :)

Nice job, I too will warn that putting your plates right side up on the totem will catch water and can be a problem. If there's a tiny spot in the caulk that didn't seal well and the plate catches water it can cause water vapor and droplets to form in the globe that sets in that plate, in your totem that would be the globe above the blue decorated plate.
Want to guess how I know this? lol
Yes indeed I have one that happened to. You can always scrape out the silicone caulk and redo it. All mistakes are pretty easily fixable and are definitely a learning experience.
From that spot of leaky caulk I learned to use plenty of caulk then wet my finger and run it along the seal edge to smooth out the caulk and assure it is well sealed, also wipes away the extra caulk easily. I keep a little cup of water on my table and a roll on paper towels just for that.
I actually learned the wet finger trick watching the Holmes on homes show, he does that when he does caulking.

You've been busy! Lots of nice plate flowers...I especially like the black and white checked ones. Nice totem too!

RE: My first totem and plate flowers

Thanks for the nice complements. I also love the black and white ones. I'll go so far as to admit that the biggest motivation for me to buy new dishes was the ability to use these black and white dishes for plate flowers. Well, also the fact that the biggest plates don't fit in my dishwasher. I made 4 with the orange middle plates. I'm on the look out for more yellow or orange or red that size so I can use up the rest of my service.

Thanks for the input on the totem. Ravencajun - thanks for the detailed info about sealing the glass (maybe I should have asked for advice before I glued it together?). I have a metal outdoor candle holder that I'm going to cement into the ground, and I have a clear glass jar that will be attached to the bottom of the totem that slides perfectly into the candle holder. So the totem will be out in the whimsy garden, elevated about 2-3 feet. I will add a second layer of glue to the top and middle layer to make sure they are fully sealed.

Wow! Very nice for your 1st plates & totem ...I also love the idea of the blue balls added to the crystal totem! You chose some very pretty dishes for your plate flowers & they will sure add color to your gardens ... as far as hanging in a tree, I don't know how that is done ...but lots of folks on here use 'spoons' glued to the back of the plates as hangers. TFS! Jeanne S.
