I think those would make an awesome flower bed. You could always raise the "headboard" up a little by putting it up on bricks or something. You'll have to have side rails made for it as well...the actual sides of the bed. My only suggestion is to make sure that you make your sides deep enough...at least 10-12 inches. The plants will appreciate it more. I have one that I am going to move this spring and make the "mattress" part deeper. My hubby put 2x4's across the bottom, then I put a piece of vinyl lattice as my base and put weed cloth on top of that so that the soil would stay in. It works fine, just needs to be deeper. Well phooey on them! I think it's a fantastic idea! If the white is too white, you could distress it a little by adding some watered-down stain to it then using an outdoor sealer.

I think that would look very classy! Lucky you to get the 2 pieces given to you! ,I'd paint the side boards white too.

Just bury the "foot board" deeper. Easy fix. DH wasn't happy about having to go pick up a metal frame i purchased cheap on CL last fall. I told him I was either going to use it to replace single bed now that the kids are off and gone or use it in the garden. I am not sure which idea he disliked more.
