You can paint formica, but it will peel off sooner or later if you actually use the table. It would work fine on a porch and you can just consider it rustic. Plan to repaint as needed, maybe build up some layers of color so it looks intentional.

I haven't used contact paper in a while, but in the past it didn't last very well either.

Preparing the surface is very important. You can also check on the GW painting forum for more advice. I've attached a link to one site that explains the process to help you.

Thanks for the info and link, rock_oak_deer! It's in excellent condition and will remain well-protected on a covered porch. I don't think it will get much abuse.

We painted a formica counter top in our camper and it lasted for years. You could also put a piece of plexiglass over the painted top to help protect it even more.

I just did this exact same thing... I used Gripper, or I suppose Kilz would also work and a good quality latex paint and it has held up well. I used the same style table as you to go on my covered patio ....it never hurts to seal it with a polycrylic or some gloss sealant... good luck

party music - get the very best quality primer for this. Recommend going to a paint store rather than big box.

If it is very sturdy, you could consider mosaicking it!
