WOW - I love this. After trying the topsy-turvy planter one time (and I swore never again) I can see where I made my mistake - throw away the $10 planter and use my own pots.

Looks good! Tomato looks nice & healthy!! Think it might work for bell peppers too!! Let us know if it keeps hornworms off from them!! I have 1 of those black plastic things they say makes tomatoes to great, I got 3 in pkg at ts & you get a small tomato & put roots through it into the ground. I didn't know you were supposed to have some kind of "food" for the round basin, I just watered & every couple of weeks added a gallon of mixed Miracle-Gro for tomatoes in the basin! I've been growing good tomatoes ever since. I think it's because it keeps soil cool & moist. I would think you would need something on top of soil like mulch to help plus water daily??? Jan

You know I think us two are of the very same MIND! I've been working on my upside down planters for the last two weeks. Mine though I used 5 gallon buckets with a 2 inch hold cut in the bottom. I Googled them and found a video online to show me how-to. Well with my going through the motions I've decided that I needed to find a different way to plant (because shoving the little roots though the hole ended me up with wilted plants). Paper towel is a grand idea! Mine I used coffee filters. Also I needed to find a way to support some of them instead of hanging them all from my metal patio cover (three are on shepherd hooks bungeed to the posts of the patio cover). I'm in the throws of installing a drip line to them so I can still go on vacation and still have tomatoes and peppers. I need to go and take a photo to post. BTW your tomatoes look VERY healthy! What kind did you plant?

I tried this years ago, in a bucket.
I wasn't impressed, it is so windy here that the tomato stems got all twisted up.

I think this was a Better Boy Tomato. I have 18 other plants in my garden. But I just wanted to try this. If we don't get some rain pretty soon they are not going to do anything. Jlily

Oh I love your idea and it looks 100 times nicer then the topsy planter! The flowers in the top is very cool too!!!
