| Specifically, barnboard & recycled materials birdhouses. I have been looking everywhere online for new pictures to look at/drool over.
I think I have to blame Margo’s trash to treasure website. I now have the white shutter birdhouse as my wallpaper. I have some shutters saved just for this purpose, but we are also renovating the house. Last year we gutted the whole top floor right back to the logs & resized the rooms, insulated and we are now mudding drywall. So, I don’t have time to build my birdhouse (s). I really can’t justify it right now – we’re hoping to install the hardwood flooring by August. And then after, we’ll be gutting the main floor in September & it starts all over. Here’s a picture of our house:
Anyway, I seem to be trying to satisfy my obsession with looking at birdhouses for now – does anyone have any good ones saved, or some great links to share?
Jonesing like an addict,
Gail

Did you look on eBay at birdhouses? I love all the ones in the previous posts, they are wonderful. I am SO kicking myself for GIVING away the collection I had 3 yrs ago when we moved to a different house. I had them all inside and had a guestroom decorated in a birdhouse/country theme. Had about a dozen or more really neat wood ones of all sizes. This house didn't have a guestroom and I was trying to cut down on some of my collections. However, I hadn't met you guys yet, so now the hindsight is killing me. Karen |

| you can't have too many birdhouses. but you can put them in the wrong place. i attached one to a post in back of my mailbox a few years back. removed it after i got the idea that the mail carrier was waving at me differently. |

| Hi, Here's a link to some bird houses I built. I love curb shopping, even on the freeway, for license plates, mud flaps, flying furniture, etc., lol!! Never a shortage of 'stuff' here in southern California, year round. Your house is so cute, it reminds me of a birdhouse. Don't forget to post pics!! Linda |

| Here's a cute way to display birdhouses. This place is on my school bus route and one day I took my camera to get a shot of this grouping. This lady buys/salvages old stair banister parts, old fence posts and columns and uses them to put her birdhouses in a grouping. I have no idea how she fastens them to the ground! She takes them down in the winter tho.

| All of these birdhouses are just awesome. I recently put a feeder plate "on my property" next to "my fence" and come home often to find it tipped over. I really think the neighbors are flipping it over just to be pains in the you know what. Sure doesn't bother them though that their yard is one huge trash bin incluing the garbage cans knocked over for all kinds of creatures to get into it. Noooo, it's my little feeder causing all the problems. Boy, some people got nerve. |

When I purchased my place there was a post in place for a purple martin house that is amazingly easy to take down. There is a concrete base with two short lengths (about 18") of angle iron stood on end and cemented into the base. They are placed so that a long length of metal pipe fits in between them. Two bolts go through all three pieces. The bottom bolt is meant remain in place at all times but the top bolt easily slips out so that the pipe is hinged and swings down to the ground so that you can reach the martin house to clean it out or to make repairs. I find it easy to use and think you could use the same design with pvc pipe as long as it would support the bird house that you wish to put on it. Best, spiderwoman |

| Me too! I'm the Fowl Places person. I suppose I'm skirting the commercial plug rules of GardenWeb, but what the heck. Just finished a new design I thought I'd share in this birdhouse thread on Garden Junk (as the only thing new I use are the screws in my birdhouses - all else is cool old stuff and either barn or fence boards - or both). Anywho, I've not gotten any feedback yet on this design as only my wife and a few friends have seen it in person. Right now I'm calling it the Rooster Roost Birdhouse. I'll have it and a few others at the next show I'm doing (see my website at a link above in another post for more info.). I'm not full time with Fowl Places. I teach middle school Science, Computer Exploratory and Math. Lucky me - I don't need lots of sleep!
This design is for bluebirds w/ a 1-9/16" entry hole. From comb to toe is around 20". The inside nesting compartment opens from the right. It is roughly 5" x 5+" and the floor is 6" below the bottom of the entry hole. That puts the floor at about mid-wing. My designs are fun to make but take a bit of time (and that's not counting rounding up the materials). Therefore my prices aren't very attractive - all of my designs start at over $100. If anyone has any questions about my materials or methods please ask away. Steve Baran - Fowl Places |

| I'd love to be able to include a photo of one of my birdhouses in my follow-up as others have, but the instructions say it can't be done. Can anyone help me with easy directions? |
RE: I'm obsessed with birdhouses!!
| | |
| Daisyme, The way I'm showing photos is via this method: (IMG SRC="http://www.sbaran.net/gwimages/2ndrooster.jpg") The image must be already on a web serving computer and in place of my parentheses you use the < and > symbols. The only spaces in this html code is between the IMG and SRC. The rest is the link to the photo (in this case my second rooster). If all works well here is the result with the < > in stead of the ( ).
I hope this helps! |
RE: I'm obsessed with birdhouses!!
| | |
| Nestmaster, thank you so much for trying to help me. I found your response here after posting my question again. I guess I don't know what a "web serving computer" is though. Sigh. I'd sure like to find a way to post some pics here. Your rooster is wonderful! |

| Daisymae, there is a post with picture posting directions on here. Probably just do a search in the search box to find it. I will try to help in the meantime. Most of us use Photobucket which is free. You open your account there,www.photobucket.com. Then click on browse and a window will open from your computer pictures program, select the pic you want and click "open". Keep doing this until all the pics you want to share are loaded on Photobucket, click "Upload" and wait. Once they are on Photobucket you just select the pic or pics you want to post here, go to the bottom of the page, click on "generate html and img code'. This takes you to the next page, click on the 1st option, then right click and select "copy". Come to Garden Junk, start your post, then just right click again and select "paste". Now click on "preview message", and your pics will then show up on the post. Click submit and they will be on here. Hope you can follow this step by step. If you have questions, please come back and ask so one of us can assist you. Looking forward to seeing your pics. Luvs |

| The thumbnail post about multi pictures was posted by Nigella. If you enter her name in the search box you should be able to find that post. But it does involve photobucket--not posting from your hard drive. |

| Hi all, So nice to see this thread revived. I've included a link to the posting instructions I use - someone on the Cottage Garden forums posted it. Hi Robolady, We're still working away. We're almost finished the flooring upstairs:
Then we just have to put on the baseboards & window/door trim. We also got our outdoor woodboiler this weekend:
The trench to the house:
Then we're working on the main floor this winter. So no crafting for me - I live vicariously through this forum - lol! All the best, Gail |

| Bright199, did your coke crates have holes in the bottom? If not, did you have gaps in the wood? I have 3 Pepsi crates I would like to make into bird houses, but I want to find out what you did first. How did you build yours? |

| I have started sculpting birdhouses out of concrete. They are certainly something unique and original for the collector. They are pretty time consuming to build because I steel reinforce the cement to keep them thin, light and strong. They are hand sculpted, functional works of art that I thought a birdhouse obsession may be able to appreciate. |

| What a great thread! I love all the pics and all the ideas. MrsDutchy - we live in Australia and there aint no getting away from cobwebs!! I never had this problem in NY. When I first moved here and complained about them my neighbor said, 'Get used to it. You're in the country now." HA! I really hate those really sticky ones. Where do you find the flowers for your mosaics? I can't find them anywhere! |
RE: I'm obsessed with birdhouses!!
| | |
Thanks Cait, sorry I haven't been around for a while, I've been flat out getting things made for the craft market so I've neglected everyone I'm afraid. I hate the webs too, and we have daddy long legs spiders everywhere - so annoying!! I buy a lot of my porcelain roses from the US but the ones on these birdhouses came on different ornaments that I picked up from swapmeets n garage sales. I smash the ornaments get the flowers off. Keep your eye out, you'l find them. (((hugs))) Tracey www.shabbygirlmosaics.blogspot.com |
