You can use any color grout.

Neat looking planters. Ok did I miss something?? Are these styrfoam covered with thinset or grout??? Now why didn't I think of that?? Do tell please.

Hi Kat.They are covered with grout.A member of my herb club heard about it and on Saturday a couple of us got together and made 25 of them.The containers you can get from your local grocrey store from the fish dept.We got the grout at home depot.It comes in alot of different colors.Then you use grout enhancer to mix it.then you put a thin layer on the bottom and side's and bottom and a bout 2 inches on the inside,cause you'll be putting dirt in.Let that dry.make sure you get it all covered.after its dry then you put it on a little thicker.It drys fast.once it's dry look and make sure all the white is covered.before you plant in it put drainage holes in bottom with a screw driver.Also you can use Omaha steaks containers.It's easy.And not as heavy as hypertufa..LOL Joan

why cover the inside couldn't you plant in the plain styrofoam?

Hi edwena0316. We put the grout 2 inches down cause you need to put the grout on the rim and it will drip down.Plus if the dirt shifts you won't see any white styrofoam..
Yes it's a great recyle and it's pretty cheap to make.I'm making them as gifts for the neighbors for christmas.And our club will sell them at our herb sale ,it will be a good seller for a scholorship fund.

WhooHoo!!! Great Projects! I too am working on styrofoam!!! Making my Cait inspired Throne!!! I left a bit extra on the base pc, so I could put a planter...now I know what that planter will be made out of!!! ;-)

Ooooo I like these! I've been stashing Omaha Steak containers (curb shopping trophies) 'til I can cover them with 'tufa. I think I'll try this for a couple of them. I love planting in them.
I've read about painting styro., apparently water based latex paint works really well. Anyone ever tried it?
