Get the weed eater out and scalp the dead grass down to dirt. The bottom of the sod needs to touch dirt.

Are you planning on sodding bermuda again? I hope so because you will still get some bermuda coming up in that spot. You could also rent a verticutter or a dethatcher to help break up the soil to give the sod something to hold on to.

No you cannot install sod over dead grass. You will need to rototill the soil and level the soil first. If you have used Roundup recently - even within the past year, there is a strong likelihood that it could destroy the sod. The best approach would be to add 3 - 4 inches of fresh soil before sodding, Roundup is very potent stuff and for that reason has been banned in many municipalities.

I've installed sod over dead, round up killed grass. It it can just be dropped right on top of dead grass, but the success rate goes way up of you can get the sod directly onto soil. That's where roots want to be. That's why I recommended removing the dead grass.

Original poster, scalping down to bare dirt is all that's necessary. Running a dethatcher over the area like suggested above will also work great. Tilling and adding topsoil is not necessary. At all.

Sod can be laid even the day after roundup application. I've heard of people spraying round up and seeding the same day.

I agree with grasshole. I have done it many times with great results. Bermuda is so aggressive, sod takes root on anything. It will grow across my concrete if I let it.

frankly ... all other minutia aside .... its a water management issue ....

if the soil the sod is in .. does not touch the native soil ... then you wont be able to keep the sod.. properly watered ...insuring such.. increases the odds of easy success ...

will it work otherwise... sure.. maybe.... anythings possible ...
