How to rebuild lawn trampled by big dogs?

Last April we rescued a large breed puppy. It was not until the past few months that are yard started to show bare spots from areas he ran in. Prior to getting the puppy our yard was full, green and well maintained. We recently rescued another puppy and the two dogs are always outside playing. This has caused even more damage to the yard in certain areas. I know the yard will never look the same but is there a way to atleast build it up. Kenneling, tying them up, or anything like that is not an option. However any other ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My reply on this topic is always the same. Cover the entire area in several inches of shredded bark mulch. Six inches deep is a good start. It is easy on the dogs' feet and it absorbs their wastes very well. I would keep it watered like it was a lawn to keep the biology healthy. You might even apply an organic fertilizer like used coffee grounds to help keep the biology active and healthy.

Its kind of a tipping point. If you follow the practices advocated here, a healthy, aerated, properly watered and fed lawn can take more traffic, dog or otherwise. But, as Dchall notes, past a certain point you have to choose between having lawn or dogs on it. Is there enough room to build a nice dog run area with the layering dchall suggests and some fenced off lawn area?
