Bermuda Grass ?? (pics)

Hello all.

I have just bought a home (Atlanta,Ga ) and will be getting ready for my first spring. I am fairly new when it comes to landscaping and keeping up a lawn. I would like to really get a hold of this lawn and bring it back to life. My home is pretty much the first house that is seen when pulling into the subdivision. Below I have attached some pictures to give you a idea of what I'm working with. Is this Bermuda grass??? What approach should I take for nursing it back ? I have some "dirt" spots from where I moved the mailbox from one side of the driveway to the other, and also one from where someone installed a "french drain" to help with some water runoff I was having. Due to me knowing no better, this guy did a terrible job and water still pools at the location. I will probably have to hire someone more competent to come in and fix this mess. Either way..getting back to the dirt spots...would I just seed those areas? I looked at the scotts 4 step program, but just figured I would ask some professionals for a less "one lawn fits all" approach. Should I be putting some pre emergent down now and also fertilizer? I have also found out I have a full irrigation system for the yard, and have tested it. Thanks in advance for any responses I get.

OK that is Bermuda, but I hope on 4 of those pictures the color is just way off on your camera. I am speaking about the 4 pictures where it appears gray in color. At first I thought they were B&W photos but when I opened them I could see some green weeds. Dormant Bermuda grass is a tan straw color. Dead Bermuda is Gray.

Search the web and find a document called the Bermuda Bible. I would show you a link, but I would be banned if I did. Read it then come back with your questions or post them elsewhere, like where you find the bible.

Like TW said, if all of your turf is straw colored, you'll be fine. All you need to do is fertilize and water, per the Bermuda Bible (TW wrote it) Those bear spots will fill in, (along with your beds and sidewlk too :). That's an inside joke for us Bermuda fans. Bermuda spreads like crazy when well cared for.

Right now, you can spray anything green (weeds) with round-up. Also apply AMAZE pre-m per the bag instructions. Then you won't fight weds and crab grass all season.

Get ready to cut at least twice a week.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have done some more research, along with reading the replies. Let me know if this sounds like Im on the right track.

- Get soil test from my county extension office
- Put down Amaze pre-emergent and spot spray with round-up
- Scalp lawn at first sign of edges greening
- After scalping (2 weeks?) apply slow release high nitrogen fertilizer pending soil results
- Apply Nitrogen every 30-45 days
- Only water when needed, but look to run sprinkler system once a week in the morning hours???
- Look into buying a motorized reel mower
- In July some timelook to core aerate my lawn??

For the most partdo I have a grasp of it? I didnt take a picture of it but in the front/side yard I have a little valley where water just sits when it rains. I had someone come and install a "French drain" but it did no good. Some time this week I'm having a company come out and give me a quote on leveling that area. Is that something I should get done asap?? Or just get my lawn healthy this year and handle it when the grass goes dormant this fall??

Anyone?

Sounds good. I'd skip any Round-Up spraying this close to green up. If Atl is like the rest of the country, some of that Bermuda may be awake. You can spot spray with a Bermuda safe herbicide when the grass fully awakens, but chances are that the heat, low mowing, and monthly nitrogen will do all the current winter weeds in with no extra work on your part.

The Amaze will keep crabgrass, and other summer annual weeds at bay. You can use it 1/2 rate now, and the other 1/2 later in the season to extend protection and prevent a winter weed invasion next year.

I would do the repairs now, or better yet in about May or June. By that time your Bermuda will be growing rapidly and will repair any damage done by the work by the end of the year.

Find the Bermuda Bible and memorize it. :)

Sounds like your bermuda grass is in bad shape. Lucky you. I find the stuff impossible to kill. If I was you I wouldn't do anything to encourage bermuda grass to grow. It looks terrible, isn't soft in the winter and spreads everywhere you don't want it to be. The weeds are preferable to bermuda grass.

My advice; try to cover the bermuda with soggy newspapers for a few months. Then cover that with top soil and plant a good grass.

Is that something I should get done asap??

Wait until late May early June for it to warm up and the grass is growing vigorously.
