| Hi, everyone. I am hoping to get some quick, straightforward advice on what I should do to reclaim my lawn. Last year, the my front and back yards were all but overrun by weeds, so I decided to kill it all using a general herbicide (roundup). The herbicide worked, and I had planned on replanting this spring, but with the warm winter, the weeds have already moved back in.
So where and when do I begin? Should it be another round of herbicide to kill everything then replant seed and water like crazy? What month would be best for this? Also, you might not be able to see it well in the pictures (links below) but the front lawn terribly uneven. Do you guys have pointers on leveling? The dirt is also strangely spongy, if that makes any sense. I can step on a small hill and it will collapse in 3 or 4 inches. Thank you for the help. Here are links to my photobucket account with pictures of the lawn. |

| You have a much more serious issue than you realize. Picture 3 shows it fairly clearly. Your soil is higher than the concrete at the patio. Does your patio flood when it rains? you need to regrade the garden so that the water flows away from the house...and your neighbor's house if that becomes an issue. Regrading will take care of all your concerns except when to seed. Regrading will require a tractor so prepare to take down a fence. Just do it. The best month for seeding is September and maybe late August depending on your summer. The worst time is probably May but between now and May is pretty bad, too. You missed your opportunity last fall. Simply mowing your weeds and taking care of them will be fairly satisfying for you. Regular water (monthly in the cool months and maybe once every 7 days in the hottest heat of summer), mowing (high to minimize weeds), and fertilizing (Memorial Day), will go a long way to a good looking lawn even if you don't have perfect grass. Do that until August and then think about your seeding project. Don't even worry about the weeds. Just manage them. |
