strange growth on lawn

Does anyone know what this strange growth is ? They are starting to pop up on my lawn.

I don't know the biological name but we always called them "puff balls". They appear over night as a tan ball of various sizes, average about 3"diameter.

After a few days they turn dark and when they break they release their powdery spores. After the break they look like what you have.

We have had them in our yards in Indiana Ohio, and the Carolinas. In my experience they have not increased and seem pretty harmless.
