Is it too early to kill winter weeds?

Hello everyone,
I have chickweed and henbit that is actively growing in a dormant zoysia yard. Can I treat with weed killer or do I need to wait? I cannot wait for spring. This winter has been so depressing. I'm ready for the outdoors. |

| I think you can use roundup to kill weeds in a dormant warm season lawn. I don't have a warm season lawn, so I hope someone who does can verify this. |

| I wouldn't spray roundup on "dormant" zoysia. People do that with bermuda, but bermuda is much more forgiving and recovers faster if it is damaged. You can try a broadleaf herbicide on them, but I suspect that you won't have much luck until it warms up a bit. |

I'm with Bill, a broadleafed weed killer is what will kill weeds without harming natural grass. iF you understand the science of how plants take up water and air into their roots to feed a growing plant you can see that probably weeds given herbicide at this time will not be effective, it will just sit in the soil surrounding the roots. How long it can set waiting for the time it could be effective is another question. Roundup kills everything green, it has nothing against killing weeds and grass and anything else it makes contact with. You can re-plant within a couple weeks using the product though. AT this time if you can see a weed why not just pull it out. But if you dont get all of it, chances are it will just re-grow from the root you don't get. The more you think about what is depressing, the more likely it will get you down. I'm in agreement, winter blahs can be a downright beggar but think of something good about your garden and how it will come to life soon enough. The farmers are looking for more snow so it can put moisture in their fields. I wonder what the farmers around the east coast states are looking for; maybe a late spring so that all this snow-melt that will come from the feet of snow they have now can be absorbed gradually. Otherwise there's going to be an awful lot of flooding which can tear away topsoil and make it dangerous for the young ones round creeks and rivers. |

| Where in SC are you located? I believe the entire state is currently cover with snow right now. You can apply selective herbicides right now, it just going to take longer for the weeds to die, but they will. You can also spray roundup on fully dormant Zoysiagrass without killing it. It might delay the green up in late Spring, but you're not going to damage it. What you can do is round up the entire lawn so the green up in the Spring will be uniform. You can also apply a pre-emergent right after the roundup application (Dimension or Amaze will work) to prevent more weeds from germinating. |
