Seeding

I live in Delaware zone 7. I was thinking of seeding with Scotts partial shade mix on February 26. If I do that would I need to have to water it at all or just let it go. I read on the post below that I should wait until after a rain to do it. Lawn seed is pretty expensive these days and I don't want to waste it. Is next weekend, say Feb 26 an OK time to seed? What's optimim? Thanks for the help.

I think I might try Pennington seed. Anyone try their 25lbs Complete Sun & Shade Mix? Their Pankoted KY 31 Fescue was given high marks but I guess this needs more sun? I just want good grass that germinated abundantly and doesn't brown during the winter. Thanks for the help.

What's better for a date to seed February 26th or March 4th or doesn't it matter too much? I am thinking of putting the seed onto next months budget Even with Pennington seed it'll cost $150 to seed the lawn.

RE: Seeding

Do you know that spring is a terrible time to seed a lawn? It is terrible for two reasons. 1. The new grass plants will not have time to develop strong roots before the summer heat comes in to dry them out. 2. Crabgrass seed is waiting for the ideal conditions to sprout. The ideal conditions for crabgrass are identical to the ideal conditions for your grass seed. Thus, by late July your new grass plants will be dying off and the crabgrass will be spreading in to fill the gaps where your new grass was. You are much better off seeding in September (maybe late August) when the crabgrass plants are dying off and you have 9 months before the summer heat hits.

With that in mind, is it possible for you to wait until fall to plant your new lawn? If you already have a lawn or even a weed patch, you can do a lot to prepare your soil between now and August so you get a really great lawn for next season. Even weeds can look pretty good when mowed every week. And we can tune you up so you have fewer and fewer weeds all the time. If you seed now you are taking your chances that you will be renovating again in August anyway. And you probably can only afford to do it one time.

"you can do a lot to prepare your soil between now and August "

Thanks dchall, tell me more about how to prepare my soil. It's not too amiable to Scott seed aparently, It's hard soil.
I was thinking of planting some Pennington Complete Sun & Shade Mix now and then retrying in late August. The backyard is so bad that I like to try it both now perhaps and then again in late August. I thought it would take a while before the heat starts affecting things. I think I can spend $100 or so on seed now and maybe $150 on seed in the fall. Do you think the Pennington will grow even though the soil isn't so great? Sigh, your right, weeds don't look too bad after they're mowed.
