Moss Out - Moss controls in lawns

Searching for information on this forum for control/elimination of moss in lawns I conclude "Moss Out", brand name, also available from Scotts.. is very effective and safe. It comes in both a liquid and in granular forms.

Is there any experience/advice on the effect of Moss Out on grass seed, affect on the germination of seed.

I prefer liquid hand pump control for applying herbicides and assume the liquid Moss Out would be easier to control (hitting just the moss) than spreading granules.

I also plan to hit the moss infested areas of my lawn with some granular lime. I have in the past three years been mulching tree leaves and leaving it on the lawn. It is mostly Maple, but giving the increase in the growth of moss I suspect the mulching of leaves is contribution to the problem.

I have used it, it works great and shouldn't have any detrimental effects on your lawn. In fact it should make it greener, as it's just an iron solution. Read the label, but I am fairly sure it won't affect germination either. Moss likes damp, acidic soil, with plenty of shade. Mulching leaves will lower pH a tiny bit over time, but it shouldn't cause a moss problem. You really should do a soil test to see what your soil's pH is, and which lime you should use. Most eastern soils are acidic, and calcium deficient, which would necessitate calcitic lime, not dolomitic which is what you normally find at big box stores.

Thanks, I always thought lime was lime... no difference other than powder (ouch) or granular. Can I expect to see the words Calcitic or Dolomitic on the bag, not in small print?

I purchased one bag of Moss Out granular - the bag had a strainer/net under a re-closeable opening. It didn't go far, and I think I'll like liquid better. We're expecting light rain, I suppose that will help activate the Moss Out granules. Looking I also see Moss Out for roofs. My north facing roof has some lime problems, especially where some birch trees are up against the house, and in the last few years have grown about the roof line.

Most people do too, so don't feel bad. No, don't expect to see those names on the bag, but some brands do put it on the bag. On the back of the bag will be percentages. Calcitic will have mostly calcium compounds, dolomitic will be mostly magnesium compounds. Sometimes calcitic is labeled as "fast acting", but this is no guarantee. Look at the label. I use a product called Cal Turf Pro which dissolves faster than regular lime, and does a good job raising pH.

I think the Moss-Out liquid does a better job personally, as you are coating the moss with a liquid, instead of having the granules dissolve.
