Just bought a house and identifying the various plants. I want to go native, xeriscape informal with no lawn.

I was surprised to see Bermuda grass as a alwn. Will this die on its own, Or do I have to kill it?

You have to kill it.

You can try to kill it. But you gotta a big surprise coming your way.

I almost suggested a priest.

OK ... I'm familiar with the ability of Bermuda to resurrect itself from one withered tuft into a sprawling weed.

I was hoping that it was far enough out of its normal growing zone to make it easy to get rid of. But if I have to go all medieval on its rhizomes, I'm ready to do it.

The problem is with the xeriscaping. You can kill the bermuda all the way dead by dosing it with RoundUp, twice, in May. First you fertilizer well, tease it into thinking you want it, then you drop the RoundUp hammer. It will die best when healthy, so hence the fertilizer. The then you want to xeriscape. One day when you least expect it, you will get a new bermuda seed blowing in and taking root. Nature hates bare spots and xeriscaping is little more than coordinated bare spots. My parents bought a xeriscaped house in the California Sonoran Desert in the 80s. They never used so much herbicide as with that rock garden. I just Googled that house and see that the new owners have a lawn now. Abq might be different being as you're a mile high. Have you talked to people with xeriscaped gardens to see what is involved? Just withholding water is not all you have to do. Even the desert gets weeds.

What altitude is it at? NM is prime climate for Bermuda unless you are at high altitude. I am in Prescott AZ (5500 feet) and lawns here can either be Cool or Warm season and mostly Bermuda for those few that do have lawns here.

Altitude ... 4600-4700 feet.

We're still in the clearing out the crap stage: Spanish broom, dead cactus, badly placed trees, high-maintenance groundcovers, rampant vines matted with dead stuff all has to be cleared out ... the lawn is low on the list.

But it will be killed.

You would have to drop nuke bomb to really kill 100% of bermuda. That's how hard it is to get rid of bermuda.

Ohhhhh, did you say, "...rampant vines matted with dead stuff?" You must be absolutely sure you have killed any bind weed before starting a lawn. If you think bermuda is a weed, you ain't seen nuthin' yet.

lazygardens, have you always lives in NM?
