6,000 sq. ft. hillside full of weeds what to do?

I have a fairly steep hillside that runs down to my barn. It is pretty much meadow grass & weeds with more than it's share of canada thistle which as far as I can tell is an immortal weed. (comes back every year no matter what I do.)

It's a tough area to mow even without the weeds.

I am considering options to deal with it with the objective of decent looks and lower maintenance.

I have considered various ground covers but it seems such an approach would take a lot effort to get established and I don't have the time for that.

looking for options. I can water this area relatively easily.

I am considering the following:

1. have lawn service I already use apply weed killer and simply keep mowing it. a lot less weeds should equal less mowing.

2. apply round-up this spring (perhaps as many as 3 times) and reseed with a robust northern grass mix.

3. find a ground cover that won't require a lot of support to get established.

options anyone?
