Repair my lawn

Well I need to begin tackling my lawn and this weekend seems to be a good time to start with the weather warming. Here is my plan
1) I've checked the soll and it shows that it is neutral ph. That is curiuos as there are a few patches of mossy like vegetation. It's isolated so I will tackle that on a case by case basis.
2) A lot of dead vegetation will dethatch that.
3) Next aerate the soil
Here is where I'm stuck in thinking. Do i bring in compost to rehab the sol or do I just ad a slow release fertilizer?
4) Follow up with seeding
5) water

Please help me correct my thinking here, especially with regards to the compost or fertilzer. The yard is clay, but doesn't appear to be too compacted.
