Lawn advice

I moved into a new home last fall and the backyard was overrun with crab grass. I was able to kill a good deal of it before the winter but now I am forced to re-seed this Spring. When is the earliest I can do this? I do have a sprinkler system.

Well I assume you are planting a cool season grass since you are in zone 6. Most cool season grasses germinate when soil temps are above 50 degrees, 55 is even better. The bad news is spring seedings come with inherent difficulties and your soil is filled with crabgrass seed, so it will return when soil temps are above 60 degrees for 5-7 consecutive days. Tupersan can minimize crabgrass germination, but it's expensive and doesn't last very long, about a month. Tenacity is another herbicide that many are using to combat weeds on new turf. Your new grass will have to deal with the heat and humidity of summer before it is mature, which can lead to losing some of the new grass to stress and disease. You can seed now if you really want to, grass won't germinate if soil temps are too low, but it would be better to seed when a morning soil temperature is above 50 degrees about an inch or two below the surface. You also want to make sure night time temps are above freezing. Late summer, early fall seedings are much better for many reasons, and you would be well advised to wait if that's possible. Just out of curiosity, where are you located?

Get used to the idea of one more season with crabgrass. Fall is the time to take care of it with new seed. In some places, fall starts in August so be sure to answer tiemco's question.

I'm in New Rochelle, NY. I need to plant this Spring and am willing to plant again in the Fall if I need to.

New Rochelle, I'm pretty close, about 35 minutes to the east. What are the conditions of your yard in terms of sun and shade? Have you ever had a soil test? What are your expectations? (OK yard, good yard, best on the block, best in the town). How much time are you willing to devote to it?
