Best way to build up a depressed area of lawn?

In our back yard the former owners used to have a pool, and it appears to have left a depressed indentation in the back yard. It is obvious to the naked eye, and I'd ball park it at approximately 1.5 inches deeper than the rest of the surrounding area. The lawn grows poorly there because they did a crap job reseeding it, so I'm constantly fighting weeds there.

I'd prefer not to hire someone because that seems expensive. Is there an option that my husband and I could do ourselves to raise up the level of the ground? Could we just lay sod on top of the stuff thats already there? Gradually add compost and soil to raise it up and let the existing grass grow through?
