Help on soil prep for Bermuda

About 3 years ago, 60% of the grass in my backyard died off. During the course of the last 3 years I repair the sprinklers that were located in the backyard. I also had a large soon to die tree removed from the yard.
And other inside house remolding that put the yard repair on hold.
This week I'm having the last of the stump from the large tree removed. Of course this has left a large crator in my yard.
What I want to do is removed the grass that is left, regrade the yard to give better drainage. Fill in the crator, and get the soil ready for a Bermuda seed planting.
All the "research" I've seen up ontil now had said to till and amend the soil. Such as peat moss; mushroom compost, ect.
Now reading this site, tilling in not recomended, and I understand why.
I'm getting confused!!!
My first question is,
How do I level out the yard when I have to add more soil?
Whats the best way to get rid of the old grass?

More info..I will have full sun in the backyard for about 6-8 hours a day.
