Taking my lawn from fescue to bermuda. Just sodded with TifGrand 2 days ago. I did my research and have the Bermuda Bible memorized. I have one (hopefully) question. When should I give the sod its' first mowing and feeding. It's just starting to show green. Thanks in advance.

How high is the grass now? Once it is up 1/3 taller than it is now you can mow it back to the present height. It is already going to be stressed from having its deeper roots cut off, so I would not scalp it down any lower than it is now until later in the season. Don't fertilize until you have mowed it for the second time. Then you can be assured that you have roots taking up water and nutrients. To fertilize earlier would be a waste of fertilizer. Thanks for doing your research!

Assuming you will maintain at 1 inch mow when it gets to 1.5 inches. Fertilize it as David suggest. Sooner is better than later.

David is correct as far as mowing goes. Do not mow off more than 1/3 of the leaf with one mowing. This may require mowing on a 4 to 7 day interval at first while your TifGrand sod creates a good root structure. Using a pre-emergent herbicide recommended for Bermuda lawns is good for using during the spring and fall months, but do not apply fertilizer to a wet lawn. This could burn your lawn. |

I got a huge problem with that link. Maintaining TifGrand at 2-inches is a horrible recommendation. Optimum for TG is 3/4-inch with a reel mower, and 1.25 with rotary.

Hey texas-weed, did you notice that Super-Sod's link directs you to the Super-Sod website? Can you say troll? Yeah I caught that right off the bat. If I knew how to report it I would. I have been on here for about 6 or 7 years now, and I am a Sod Farmer (well retired) with a retail outlet myself, and there is not one person here that can tell you who I am or where my farm is or the name of it. Well there might be a couple who have contacted me privately off-line who know, but to my knowledge have not let the cat out of the bag. I am not there to make a buck, I have made plenty. I am here to give something back.

What made you decide to use TifGrand? Shade I assume. I installed three pallets of TifGrand (from Super Sod) last year in some lightly shaded areas. I'll tell you, it doesn't look very good. Even in full sun. My 419 looks far superior and is a ton cheaper. I may try Celebration this year but I have to drive to Alabama to find it.

I may try Celebration this year but I have to drive to Alabama to find it. I think we have discussed this before. Personally I have not grown either TG or Celebration, but i have a lot of professional trade publications that go very in depth about both. Shade tolerance is about equal between the two. As you know TG does not live up to the claims by promoters, its still fricking Bermuda. Also as you noticed neither TG or Celebration is NOT going to look as good as Tifway-I or Tifway-II (aka 419). As an alternative you might try something like Diamond or Emerald Zoysia as they do have some moderate shade tolerance and are similar to Bermuda in appearance. Still will not match Tifway. Only grass that looks better than Tifway is going to be TifSport, TifEagle, Baby, or one of th eother semi-dwarf or dwarf varieties. FWIW TifSport has about as good shade tolerance as TG and Celebrations. Might be worth trying as it cost the same as Tifway. TifSport is now becoming the preferred Default. It is almost a golf putting green quality. It has excellent cold tolerance and improved more than Tifway. Think about it.
Rager Follow Up

Rager or anyone else here is a tip you might try out. Find a sod farm or two who sells varieties you are interested in. Go to the farm and find the manager or owner and lay this story on them. Tell them you have an existing yard full of 15 year old U3 Bermuda that has seen its better days and want to replace it, but not sure which variety of Bermuda you want and want to take a few samples to take home and plug down and see how they do. When you decide you will come back and buy 20 pallets worth to replace your U-3 Sod farms always have scrap pieces around. Get you about a square foot of each they have to offer and go home and plant them and see how they do. Even if they charge you a few bucks will not hurt anything.

I went with Tifgrand due to shade. I have a small backyard, the house faces south, so front gets full sun, a small part of the backyard gets full sun, and the rest is shaded by the house and gets morning and afternoon sun. It's been 2 weeks and I think things are going well. I'll post some pics shortly.

Let's see some pictures....It would be nice to see an actual non biased photos with Tifgrand and not a commercialized picture from a supplier. About 3 weeks ago I found a sod farm near Brookshire, Texas that uses sand based sod. I have clay based at home. I bought a pallet of celebration to test to see if the grass would smooth out better this way in the long run and it did.

It's gonna take a little longer than a couple weeks to give a final grade on a bermuda types shade tolerance. Even new tifway sod will look good for the first season, and it sucks in the shade. The second and third season will tell the tale.

TW-as always thanks much!!! for your advice! Because of you and the BB Bible my lawn looks amazing, except in the moderate shade, duh. I'm going to try TifSport this time around. grass hole is right. It will take all summer to really see how the TG will perform. I used to replace my somewhat shady areas with 419 every year (it's so cheep here). For thie first couple of months it would look great, then slowly decline. The TG I laid last year seems to be following the same path. Now that both homes on each side of me have been foreclosed upon, I will clear away a little more shade/canopy. Every little bit helps...

3 weeks does not tell very much. Post some in September and tell us what you think then.

Im in Marietta GA and laid down TifGrand sod last August. I did a 250 sq ft. area to test how it would do. My yard has many tall southern pines which shade my yard for about 1/3 of the day in the summer. I notice that it tends to green up earlier and stay green longer than my neighbors yards (zoysia and unknown Bermuda). I can tell you that my TifGrand sod looks great. I have heard some negative things about it but it is success in my yard. I actually laid down 1 of 2 additional pallets for my back yard as I transition from tall fescue (quite a task by the way). The question is if Tif 419 would look just as good. That I can't say. The only way to know for sure is to lay it down next to my TifGrand. I do have an area on the southern side of my house that gets full sun. It would be ideal for 419 or another variety. I'm not sure how the 419 or say TifSport would look once it spread into my TifGrand area. I can post some pics if people are curious.

I added some TifGrand plugs to my bentgrass for the spring. You can see in the picture the bent hating the wet heat and leaving brown spots. My neighbor has 419 and mows really high, but I'm mowing mine at .5'. It doesn't grow very fast in the shade, and it gets kind of stringy when it's tall. It's nice and thick when low. Gets thicker every week.

I'm having sort of a competition with several types of grass this year. I had a lot of trouble getting grass to grow in the shade, so I rounded up every decent contender in my yard to see which one wins. TifGrand is the small, short pot. There is also some sort of St. Augustine, some variegated St. Augustine, some fine-bladed zoysia, some Penncross, Penn A-4, Penn G-2, Penn G-6, Supra Nova poa supina, and something that sprouted up from freshly buried cable in the yard.

Pretty neat pots your got there Andy. I have a whole backyard of poa supina. It should be called Bermuda of the North, the stuff is an incredible spreader.

This is the progress that TifGrand has made in two months (3/29 - 5/29). It is getting around 6 hours of partial shade, with a few of those being pretty bright after noon. It's hard to quantify exactly. It is supposed to be able to "thrive" above 60% shade in a controlled setting. It's at least surviving for me, but the growth is too slow for traffic. TW is right about 2" being ridiculous. I would even say it requires a reel mower. I'm cutting this specimen in an arc from .25" to .5" in the center with scissors, and even then it shows cut marks from being such a dark grass.
