SSS carries many great cultivars of all species of turfgrass. Drew, the owner, seems to really care about the quality of his seed, and he usually updates his seeds every year according to the NTEP results. I would probably avoid some of his mixes, as I prefer to come up with my own, but they are much better than the mixes you buy at the big box stores. My only real knock on SSS is the pricing. I appreciate that he will sell very small amounts, but the upcharge can be a bit ridiculous, but it's a business, and it has to make economic sense for him to open a 50lb bag of seed for someone that just wants 3 lbs of it.

Drew snoops the forums and will use an alias name. So I hope he read this! Prices are beyond ridiculous for the same cultivars other vendors sell for much less. I'll disagree with tiemco about "it has to make economic sense for him to open a 50lb bag of seed" because that is the business model he has chosen and markets. He purchases 50Lb bags of individual cultivars to sell seed mixes and blends in quantities, packaged up to 50Lbs at the retail level. Tiemco and I are both aware of the 50Lb wholesale prices. Measuring, mixing and packaging does not warrant a 1000% mark up for doing this task.

I'll just add that high quality seed has 0.00% Weed Seed or Other Crop. Getting pure seed without weeds jacks the price up.

<"I'll just add that high quality seed has 0.00% Weed Seed or Other Crop. Getting pure seed without weeds jacks the price up." Yes, you are correct - it jacks the price up to maybe $4 / Lb .... not $30+ / Lb. !!!! FWIW - Fossoway33 just joined today and this was his first post. Coincidence? Drew, did you get the answer that you were looking for? If not, I can go on. Oh, I almost forgot something, Drew. This week, Home Depot has balls on sale for $9.99, in aisle 3. Why not buy yourself a pair?

What are some other good seed stores the experts here like to use, so we can compare them to SeedSuperStore IIRC, my local nursery had 50-pound bags of a Jaguar variety of TTTF for $2 a pound, and smaller bags for $2.50 to $3 a pound.

SeedSuperStore must be doing something right. It's shown in the first and second spots when you search Google for "grass seed store" and "buy grass seed."
|
I'm not an expert, but.. I've had good success with Arrow Seed. I use the "fairway blues kentucky bluegrass blend" because I like to mow short. It sells for $3.80/lb. That appears to be about 12% of the cost for the same cultivars @ seedsuperstore. I can't imagine ever paying 8-9X as much for grass seed.

I've always had great success with Hogan's.
