Help Choosing Weed Control

Hi all,
Each year I apply a Pre-emergent. Last year I didnt do it b/c I wanted to grow new seeds in the spring. Bad move. I didnt get much growth but all year I had weeds. Now this spring they're back. I need both pre-emergent and a poten weed killer.

I live in Southeastern PA.
I have KGB.
I havent identified the weeds that are out right now but they're low growing, like chickweed type with a bunch of them sprouting shoots with flowers.

So really need a good weed killer to apply along (or seperate?) from my Pre-M.

Thanks!

RE: Help Choosing Weed Control

Ok, I've identified my problem weeds :-)

1) Chickweed - this is out of control. And I've learned its sometimes called a winter weed which makes sense

2) Henbit - I've had this one for years and never knew the name! I read something that said

"The straight 2,4-D that is used on dandelions seems to act like a fertilizer for chickweed and other problem weeds. Combinations that contain 2,4-D, MCPP and dicamba are rated very effective on chickweed, henbit, red sorrel, purslane, white clover and others. These combinations are sold under several different trade names."

Anyway, I'm off to but some weedkiller that will kill these weeds and OK for my lawn.

So then: can I also puchase a Pre-M and apply it too? The only one I'm aware of comes with Scott's fert with crabgrass and I dont want to apply fert right now so as to make the weeds grow.

Thoughts?

Chickweed is most effectively killed with Weed B Gone, Clover, Chickweed, and Oxalis killer. It contains triclopyr. You might have to go to Lesco/John Deere Landscapes to get preemergents that aren't mixed with fert. Dimension, Barricade, Stonewall, are common and very good. Don't expect that seed you put down to grow however. KBG should spread into bare areas if your lawn is healthy, and your soil is in good shape.

Thanks! I just picked up Weed B Gone with Crabgrass preventer. List Chickweed and Henbit on its list of weeds. Says needs two applications and to apply in Fall though, so maybe its not as good as the Weed B Gone crabgrass product?

Yep, I'm done with the seed now and will hope the KGB fills in when healthy. Or will sod in patches.

I really want to put down the right fert combinaiton and start the season with a 30-0-1 junk that comes with the Scotts and viogro pre-emergents. Will have to search around.

thx!

RE: Help Choosing Weed Control - EDIT

EDIT to above; just found out Lesco was purchased by John Deer Landscapes. And it doesn't appear its something open to the public. Just a wholesaler to commercial business. I'll have to checkout out another local resource.

You might have the wrong version of Weed-B-Gone. The one suggested is the name of the product in big, black, letters - not on the list of weeds. It is a stronger product than what you likely have.

RE: Help Choosing Weed Control

The WBG + CG doesn't have enough Triclopyr to really wipe out Chickweed. And the Crabgrass Killer in it is Quinclorac, which is effective (short-term) as a crabgrass pre-emergent and crabgrass post-emergent. Save it for Summer. Get the WBG Clover, Chickweed and Oxalis Killer, which has enough Triclopyr to get the job done with two applications 14 days apart.

bheron, You're correct that JDL bought Lesco, however, alot of their locations are open to the public. I found one here in No. VA and got 1 bag of Dimension 0-0-7 pre-em for $21 last week. Are there other locations near you?

RE: Help Choosing Weed Control

wow, thanks so much. I definitely DID buy the wrong type. I would've had no idea either. They clearly list it as one of the weeds that it eradicates. Amazing that they can do that when everyone else here knows it wont to the job.

Ok, I know the exact one I need to buy, I used it in the past for clover. Thanks for the heads up!

About Lesco, I couldn't find any locations near me. But...I went to my trusty garden center and bought a bag of pre-m from them. Not dimension but definitely straight Pre-M and no fert. Its in my trunk and will have to get the name later. I trust this place 100%.

So will have to go back to the other place and get the right weed-b-gone.

thanks all!
