Lawn problem

There are a number of mounds of dirt of unknown origin. I have attached a pics and am trying to determine what they are and how to treat the. We do have two dogs and if possible, am looking for a non-poisonous solution to alleviate the problem. ANY help would be much appreciated!!

I see what looks like a mound of earthworm diggings at the bottom of what looks like a diamond shaped flat area of no grass. Could you take the picture again on a cloudy day or somehow cast a shadow over the area. There's too much contract to see much detail.
