What kind of grass is this? Tucson, AZ

Hello,

Just bought a house in Tucson, AZ. Surprisingly, the back yard has grass! Some areas need to be re-seeded, but I have no idea what type of grass this is. I went to a store here and it seemed like the only options were Bermuda or Tall Fescue.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me identify this. I've tried looking at websites, but apparently I stink at telling the difference... most look the same to me. :-)

Thank you so much!

It is Bermuda over seeded with Rye Grass. The Rye grass will be dead soon, very soon.

The Realtor had the old owner play a trick on you. They over seeded their Bermuda Grass last fall so the house would have green grass during winter to help sell the house. When local temps hit th e90's and winter rain quits, all th eRye grass will be dead and never return.

And you need to find the Bermuda Bible online. Memorize it and follow the rules for a great looking lawn.

Thank you so much! I have some more questions, if any one is willing to offer more help.

Would it be alright to reseed with Bermuda once the Rye has died, or do we have to start all over? If it is OK, is anyone able to to identify if we have a hybrid or common type of Bermuda grass based off the photo, so I know what type of Bermuda seed I need to purchase?

I'd like to be able to do this the right way. The Bermuda Bible looks very helpful. Very happy to be able to go over it with my husband later.

Thanks again, I really appreciate everything! :-)

You do not seed Bermuda. Yours is hybrid and there is no seed. When the weather warms up a bit the Bermuda comes out of dormancy. Find and read the Bermuda Bible.

Bermuda spreads, so all you have to do is water it, keep it mowed low and fertilize it. It starts growing when the nights warm up.

it will spread out to cover the bare spots.

Once it gets hot and is properly fertilized, it will spread quickly. Mine will grow across the sidewalks if I let it.
