Burning leaf cover

I live in a wooded area in southern Illinois. This past November my neighbor, tired of the leaves in his yard, swore he was done with raking and blowing off the leaves. One calm, fall day, he set fire to his yard. Before anyone goes ballistic about the danger etc., he had the family out there with buckets, hoses and rakes, having already raked or blown leaf-free areas around his house and outdoor buildings. The leaves burned off quickly.

I was wondering what this would do to the grass. Or if the burn-off was so rapid as to not injure the roots.

RE: Burning leaf cover

Personally I believe planned fire is the biggest waste of carbon and fertility in human history.

The fire would have burned off the tops of the grass, but if the grass was properly watered so that the roots penetrate deep into the soil, then there would be little to no root damage. If the grass was typically watered on a daily basis, then it could burn roots and all.
