Hi there, I need to figure out how to grow grass over an area that was once an in ground pool, now filled in. I've attached a photo where you'll see there is a fine gravel on top, with a sandy dirt underneath. Question is, do I put topsoil over the fine stone and seed, or do you think I should take the layer of stone off and just seed that earth underneath? Many thanks for your help!

If you bury the stone, you will have a heat sink. The stone will hold heat and will not absorb water. Both are bad for turf survival during the warm summer months. If you remove the stone layer, you'll want to add soil so there is not a depression which may pond or look out of place in the yard contour.

This project is trickier than you think. You might want to call in a pro to handle the removal and replacement of the material. What will almost always happen with a DIY project is you will replace almost enough soil. Then in three years, after it has settled, you'll have a low spot. Professional landscapers deal with this daily. I'd start by getting three estimates.
