Converted hay field

OK. I bought a little over 4 acres of some family property. The land was used as a hay field up until the end of last year's season. Here's my problem. I have about a 150x 145 feet of front yard I would like to spruce up. What's there now is a lot of thin fast growing grass with huge weeds thrown in here and there. The grass is so thin, that any foot traffic results in matting and killing it. In a few years I want to do a complete front yard grass removal, grading and add new seed. What can I do until then to remedy the grass. Could I just spread grass seed on top of the existing grass and hopefully it will take over? or do I not have any inexpensive solutions to remedy until then?

Definitely need to know your location. Giving us your zone is not that helpful. Need the town.
