| Hi All,
I am new to this forum. I recently purchased a home in Northern Delaware, and to my surprise, practically overnight, my lawn and backyard was overrun by these weeds (there are more of them than grass) as soon as it got warm out. I am not sure what to do. The neighbors yards have similar growth of these weeds, but no where near the extent that I do. Here are some pictures: http://s1058.photobucket.com/albums/t409/2305NewHome/ If someone can identify them, can you also please tell me what I need to do? Because they are all over the place, should I contact a professional? |

| The one you pulled out is bittercress. There's probably some chickweed in the lawn as well. I would probably mow the lawn, bagging all the clippings, then a few days later spray the whole yard with Weed B Gone max on a hose end sprayer. If you have chickweed then you will have to treat that with Weed B Gone CCO. |

| It is bittercress! I've been scouring the internet for pictures of weeds that are similar to no avail...that is until I looked up bittercress, and the picture hits it pretty dead on. I don't think I have any chickweed...just lots and lots of bittercress. One individual on some website suggested seeding the lawn so the grass can compete better with the bittercress next year. Timeco, do you have any suggestions on when to do this? I will mow and bag clippings as per your suggestion, and then hose with Weed B Gone. Should I then seed with grass? Which grass seeds should I get. Sorry for all the questions, but I truly appreciate the help. |

| Can you also advise on whether this is an appropriate sprayer for this concentrated speedzone (instead of the weed B gone). http://www.buywholesalecheap.com/GilmourDialSprayerHoseEndSprayer http://www.buywholesalecheap.com/Speedzone-20-Oz_p_58.html Thank you, |

| Most hose end sprayers work the same way, I am not familiar with this model, but it's a pretty safe bet it will be compatible with most herbicides. Not sure what chemicals are in that Speedzone, but make sure it is effective against bittercress. Seeding a cool season grass is best done in late summer/early fall. Sept. 1 to 15th is the sweet spot for Delaware. If you do it in spring you will have tons of weeds sprouting because you will be watering daily. Then the new grass will have to deal with disease pressure and heat stress in the summer. If I was you, I would also put a preemergent herbicide down as soon as you can to kill any germinating weed seeds. A soil test is a good idea since this is a new house, and you have no idea of what condition the soil is in. Seed selection is not as easy as just picking out a bag from Home Depot (I don't recommend that). There are many factors you need to take into consideration. Hopefully you will heed my warning and wait till September to seed, but if you don't, then don't use a preemergent unless it's Tenacity. |
