I am looking at crabgrass preventer and one of them is Halts crabgrass preventer, what is Halts? What is the difference between crabgrass preventer with fertilizer and Halts crabgrass preventer with fertilizer? Which one would do a better job? Thank you.

RE: Crabgrass Preventer

There are several preemergents. Halts uses the chemical pendamethalin, Dimension is dithiopyr, Stonewall is prodiamine. They all work well, some last a bit longer than others. Scotts charges a lot for its Halts products, Dimension and Stonewall tend to be a bit more economical. Lesco/John Deere landscapes usually carries a few preemergents, if one is near you then give them a call and see what they have in stock. It's a bit early to apply fertilizer in most areas (where do you live?) so I would try to use a preemergent only and wait to fertilize.
