| I am wanting to reclaim my back yard this year. However, you cannot see any grass. All you can see is this:
Can anyone tell me what this weed is, and the best way to kill it so my grass can come back?
(P.S. I had to go ahead and mow this, which I know might have been a mistake. It was getting huge.)

It is Purple Dead-nettle a member of the mint family. It is a winter annual weed. You have two option to control it.. 1. Mow it down and keep the yard mowed. It will die off when the weather warms and dries up 2. Use any broad leaf post emergence product, it is easy to kill.

Thanks, your reply is *very* helpful. Sounds like it's not so bad to get rid of.

Speed is of great importance here. Every flower you see is about to be a new weed seed for next year. Get it mowed now so they don't set seed. Then, you can either keep it mowed regularly or hit it with a broadleaf herbicide - or both.

This nettle only looks lovely for the week or two it's in full bloom, showing just the most extraordinary hue of purple. All other weeks of the year, it's not so lovely. Before the extraordinarily pretty purple sets in, you'll have a week or two of just ghastly purple--almost horror movie purple. But when she shines, this nettles shines with the lovliest serene purple. You almost don't want to get rid of this weed when you see it. But the pretty only lasts a week or two, then the purple fades fast. We've begun the fading period in St. Louis as of about 2 days ago.

Do not eat it as it is Toxic and will attack the liver. There is a reason DEAD is part of its name.
