| Hello, might be a dumb question but not a first for me.
While in Las Vegas I really admired the grass used by most of the hotels. I did not take a picture but I would call the grass fine bladed, dark green and reasonably thick. If anyone knows what is commonly used for such applications I would be thankful. Also I am in the DFW area and if the variety can be determined if it would grow well in my area. Thanks for any responses. |

I once saw a cake that I liked. It was chocolate and had frosting. Can you give me the recipe? Sorry, but that's close to what you're asking here. You don't know the grass, watering schedule or fertilization schedule. But you want to know details about the grass. Maybe somebody here has worked at or visited a Vegas hotel often enough to help, but otherwise, I don't think you provided enough information to give us a chance to help you. The only thing I can say is that if the grass thrived in Vegas, it should thrive in DFW. Vegas gets even less water than DFW.

I sorry, I gave what information I had. My hope was that someone with knowledge would have noticed the grass used by most of the hotels in Vegas and know the variety. I wasn't asking for the DNA of grass. I agree that grass that would grow in the heat of Vegas should do ok in Dallas, but how about in the winter? We get down in the teens but Vegas seems to stay above freezing most days. Anyhow, sorry for the bother.

I apologize for my response. I meant it to be humorous, but I think it came off as harsh instead. There are probably people on the board who have been to Vegas and since many tend to be grass fans, they might be able to help. At which hotel(s) did you see the grass? I suspect that a big part of what makes it green would be that they use a lot of water and fertilizer. They've got plenty of money and having a good appearance helps them draw more business so they can afford to spend a lot on keeping the grass green. I'm pretty sure the most common grasses in DFW are warm season grasses like Bermuda and St Augustine. Was the grass at the Vegas hotels cut really short? That would make my first guess Bermuda.

It's one of the hybrid Bermudas ... with golf-course professionals taking care of it. You'll have to check with a Dallas master gardener or lawn pro to see what grows best in Dallas, because what happens (or grows) in Vegas stays in Vegas.

bpgreen, thanks for the response, I appreciate what you said. To all, I think the grass was a variety of Bermuda, fine bladed but not as fine as I have seen on putting greens. A bit longer, maybe 2 inches. Really pretty in my mind. Thanks.

This is easy to answer. It is Bermuda grass, no question about it. I know for two reasons I am a Sod Farmer just north of Dallas TX who grows a lot of Bermuda, and I go to Vegas twice a year. However one question for you. What time of year did you see it? Heck yes you can grow Bermuda in Dallas, it is the number 1 grass grown in Dallas.

Last week texas-weed. It may be Bermuda but not like that growing in my yard here in DFW. Probably what I have is what is called common bermuda. The stuff in Vegas was much nicer.

I cannot answer what you have in your yard. If your home is fairly new construction chance are very likely it is a hybrid called 419 aka Tifway-I. But also understand the casino's have some of the best horticulturist money can buy. Ever been in Belagio Conservatory, Wynn, or Mirage and notice the beautiful gardens? If I am not mistaken I believe Bellagio has a huge nursery that grows most of the flowers plants, and tress for most of the Casino's in Vegas. Anyway I have never inquired what variety of Bermuda they have, but what I can tell you it is a semi-dwarf variety. If I had to guess I would say TifGreen or Sun Turf. With all that said, at this time of year you might be seeing Rye grass. They overseed with a Rye mix in mid October so it is green in Winter. The about late March, early april they will spray with a herbicide to kill off the Rye quickly as the Bermuda greens up. What I do know is the grass is not growing in soil. Like a high end golf green it is a soil less medium and in this case a very coarse sand. Anyway the grass is maintained everyday by some of the best pros in the biz.

Perennial rye grass is pretty nice but it dies out in the summer. Ask yourself, do you want green lawn from septmeber till May/June with perennial rye grass that you'd have to put down seeds every September or go with bermuda (for mostly sunny lawn) or st augustine (for lawn with mature large trees) that goes dormant during December till April but have to water a lot to keep them nice thick and green during the summer if you get a drought. I must have been too drunk to notice those gardens??? My nose bleed because it was so dry. I was too busy trying not to lose too much money. I'd rather hike through China. They have that much better gardens over there... Even if I have to starve a little bit and breathe toxic air...
