The best way is 1 inch deeply and infrequently, then move the sprinkler to a new location. I've been doing that for years. Then I got a little smarter and put a splitter on the faucet and run two hoses and two sprinklers at once. It goes twice as fast.

I have seen that exact sprinkler with many different names including Ace Hardware. Cost is about $20. Coverage is perfectly even over about 2,500 square feet depending on your water pressure. This model is considered a "turbo" because the mechanism which controls the spray is not an external mechanical linkage. The turbo is much better than the linkage type.
