That is poa annua. How you deal with it depends on what kind of grass you have in the yard. So, what is the rest of the turf made up of?

Not sure exactly what the grass is. I bought it from a turf farm.

Ugh. A few of those will eventually turn into hundreds/thousands. Be sure to bag when you mow while they are blooming (I reeeeeeaaaly hate to say that). If there are just a few, hand dig them out now!

Unfortunately, it's a curse we all deal with. Research pre-emergents that will effectively control PA on your particular grass type to address this in fall or you'll be facing it again and likely in larger quantities. You may want to read up on Tenacity. Be careful though, looks like you have fine fescue there - different mixing for FF if you don't want to damage it. It will still work done properly and and the proper timing. You're too late now for certain to use Tenacity, but may consider it for fall/spring or using a pre-M that is compatible with your grass type.

I've had some luck with it and completly eradicated it in areas, where others I've not been so lucky. Seems to be the consensus with others as well - hit or miss, but should hit it post emergent well before it hits 4 leaves if using Tenacity. This is a grass you'll get to know.

In the meantime, mow long, water deeply and infrequently - get a soil test and address any issues.

It's often called "6 week grass" and it will die just as the summer heat hits leaving you with awesome bare spots, as if the hideous flowers weren't enough. The grass that keeps on giving lol.

Wow thanks for such a comprehensive reply. It's annoying because I guess it must have been in the turf when I bought it! I'll try and dig it out today and look into the Tenacity for this autumn. Thanks again.
