Late weed removal?

I have been real busy with work and wasn't able to get any pre emergent down. My yard looks a mess right now and I finally had to get a neighborhood kid to come and knock down the weeds with a quick cut. My Bermuda looks to be maybe halfway greened up. Have I waited to late to put down pre emergent to stop the weeds? Will I have to go the roundup route and risk killing the grass during green up? Or just leave it alone for now and hopefully when I start fertilizing...the Bermuda will just choke out the weeds?

When did Round Up become the only solution to weeds? What TV show advertising do I not watch?

Assuming you have broadleafed weeds, then what you want is Weed-B-Gone. If you can identify the weeds or post pictures, we can help you pick the right kind of Weed-B-Gone. Generally WBG will kill only the broadleaf weeds and not bother the grass or grassy weeds. It's been around since the 1960s, so it puzzles me when the first thing people mention is Round Up.

You can apply preemergent any time to stop any weed seeds that have not germinated. Have you started watering yet? If so, what is your watering schedule? Also how low are you mowing?

You are right to wait to fertilize. After you mow a fully green lawn for the second time, then hit it with the fertilizer.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure what type of weeds they are. I will take some pictures this morning and post them. I haven't started to water yet. I'm located in Atlanta,Ga. I'm not sure how low he cut it recently. It's past due for a cut now..and my yard looks more like a "field" than a lawn. I just want to get rid/control the weeds that have germinated. Scalp my lawn...apply a pre emergent...top dress it...and keep up a healthy fertilizer schedule once it greens up.

Hey, atl_libra. I don't think the Bermuda will choke out the weeds. Once you start fertilizing, it's going to help the grass, but it'll also help the weeds in their battle to overtake the grass. It's never too late to stop weeds without killing the grass, with the right product. Spectracide® Weed Stop® for Lawns is specifically made to kill weeds without harming your lawn when used as directed. You can find out more about it here: http://www.spectracide.com/Products-and-Solutions/Weed-Stop.aspx

Also, we have a free Bug & Weed Identifier app. It comes in handy when trying to pinpoint which weeds are in your lawn - just upload those photos you took. You can find that app here:
