Trumpet Vines and Chain link Fencing

Hello All,

I will Xpost this message, to (hopefully) get lots of help!

We have a chain link fence with the neighbor on the other side. There is established trumpet vine all over both our and his property. It is growing along the fence, and I want it gone!!! Every year I spend hours removing the intertwined vine, life is too short! It would be miserable to dig out, due to the fencing. Once I cut it down (again), what would you recommend to kill the roots? I would like to replant at some point.

TIA for any and all help!

I had a thought...does anyone think taking a propane torch to the base might be effective?

Cut it off from the fence and then either put Roundup or pour stump remover on the remaining root ball.
Or you could just nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure. ; )

Trumpet vine is very persistent. It spreads via roots, so if you just cut it off, it will sprout up all over the place. You might try diluting some roundup, filling a few jars and stuffing some leaves from various places into the jars. Diluting it will cause the vine to intake more of it before dying, which will help to translocate it into more of the vine.

ooooh, would this work on wild morning glories too?

I think you mean field bindweed. One of its nicknames is wild morning glory (although it's not related to true morning glories).

I actually got the idea for doing this from somebody who used it to get rid of bindweed. You need to let it grow a bit so you've got some vine to stick in the jar. You also need to make sure you don't spill the jar on the grass or anything else. The person who did this said that when you do it, you see how much a single vine spreads. He said that he dipped one end of a vine into the jar and saw dying bindweed all over his lawn.

Hello Again Folks,
Thanks for your suggestions. I did some further research on the Dave's Garden site, and now I'm pretty concerned! The amount of people with negative experiences with this menace are astounding! Many said Trumpet Vine laughs at roundup! One fellow said he used watered-in rock salts with success, although that leaves the area sterile for awhile. Also, many said not to touch this vine with bare hands, as many develop a terrible, itching rash.

Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks!

1 - Do NOT cut it down ... mix glyphosate herbicide at the concentrations recommended on the label (Roundup is the most well-known brand, the generics are cheaper)

2 - carefully and thoroughly spray every leaf you can see. Put cardboard shields or paper bags ofer plants you do not want to hit.

3 - wait 48 hours or more, until the leaves start to yellow a bit.

4 - Cut the vines at the base and yank them off the fence. compost them.

5 - When the plant starts re-growing, spot spray the fresh shoots. Keep doing this until you no longer see shoots coming up.

Now, here I am with a different problem.. I want my Trumpet Vine to grow on a very unsightly Chainlink Fence, I want to cover up the fence and I have tons of Humming Birds that wil love it. I have just planted a Trumpet vine and it is doing very well. BUT.. I can't get it to stick to the Chainlink. It grows out and away from the Metal fence. I have to go out most everyday and lace it in and out myself. It won't do this on it's own. Any suggestions?? I thought I may of made a mistake by buying a Trumpet for metal climbing, but it seems to grow well on the other Chain link fence in the above Mesage.. Humm..Why won't it attach too my Chainlink fence..Help Please..
