 o
Zoysia Sod in North Florida

In 2 weeks I am going to have 3 pallets of zoysia sod delivered to my house to sod one section of my front yard. I live in a fairly shaded area and that is one of the main reasons that I am going with zoysia, plus I like the resistance and wear over SA grasses.

Other than a soil test is there anything that I can/should check to make sure that the area is OK for the sod?

There is only winter rye growing there right now and it will die shortly with the warmer weather. Can I apply cornmeal and molasses now as a preventative measure?

Any other helpful information is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what molasses prevents, but you can apply it any time. I would prefer to apply it to the soil that comes with the roots of the grass. Same goes for the corn meal. I would never suggest applying something organic underneath the surface.

What are your sod preparation plans?

I added some more topsoil to a few places that needed in the section that is getting the new grass. I will do a soil test in the next few days just to make sure that everything looks OK. Other than that there is not really anything else that I think that I need to do but if you or anyone else has some suggestions please feel free to help me out.

Why did you add topsoil? Was it low?

I would water the topsoil daily for a few days to let the weed seeds germinate. Then spot spray them with your favorite weed killer. Do that twice about 2 weeks apart and the soil will be ready for sod. Topsoil is notorious for being the source of weeds in a new lawn.

Yea...I had some drainage issues that I fixed and then filled in the washed out areas with some fresh top soil.
