You probably won't find sod farms up in your area that carry Zoysia. Zoysia is a warm season grass that is technically not a very good choice for long island due to its long dormancy, but some people don't mind that period of tan grass. The challenges of growing Zoysia sod up north as well as the low demand wouldn't make it economically feasible. There is a place in New Jersey that grows it however.

Thanks. Would you recommend any specific type of zoysia, if I even have a choice? Or is any of zenith, emerald, meyer, ok?

How far about would you plant plugs? I've read about every 12'' though this seems like there'd be too much empty space.

I am not very knowledgeable about Zoysia, but from what I have read Meyer is a good choice in your area. Plus if they are growing it in NJ, then it's probably the best one for areas above the transition zone.

I think you would be well advised to sod the area. The growing season is too short in Long Island to expect plugs spaced that far apart to grow together in one season.

Meyer is your only hope for Zoysia as it is the most Cold Tolerant of the Zoysia varieties. At best 4 to 5 months green in your area if it survives winter.

Hey, maybe we can work something out, I live in North Bergen (about 30 minutes from manhattan), and I have a lawn full of Zoysia I would LOVE to get rid of... we could split the cost of the sod cutter and delivery truck... It would probably be about $200-$300 ($150 each). If you're interested. Though I'd want to get rid of a huge chunk if not all of it.

Actually, Zoysia is WAY more common than you would think on Long Island.

ocelaris(7a) - I live in Teaneck and have been slowly going Zoysia with plugging 2 summer straight. If you still have that lawn I would gladly take your Zoysia. Let me know how you would want to do this I have a plugger and a old VAN I have always been askng for someone who would want to get rid of their Zoysia . I would make 300 to 400 plugs. If you let me would be cheaper and faster. Then you can either replace the Zoysia with Blue Fescue plugs or seed. What ever works but I don't mine the hay like look as it looks great all other times
