too late to scalp and/or dethatch?

We are in Athens GA (zone 8a) and got some emerald Zoysia sod put down in the fall which is now starting to green up. It was very thick when put down and now seems to have a good inch or two of thatch under the new growth. Some of it is dry and comes out with a vigorous raking, but some is moist and decomposing into a sort of mulch. I was afraid to scalp or dethatch new sod but I am now wondering if this would have helped. The sod was installed by a well regarded pro and is firmly rooted and seems healthy, but is it thick, squishy, and uneven. It is about 50/50 brown/green at this point. Any recommendations?
