An overall lawn view

Uh, dead? Seriously though, to properly ID a grass, it helps if it's green and growing. If I were to throw out a guess I would say it's fine fescue (dormant or dead). It could also be some type of native grass.

There is green coming up so I doubt it's all dead. I hope not at least. We are detaching this weekend and ill try to get another picture then.

What do I need to include in photo for proper ID? Just a blade and root, a cross section photo, ?

The major turfgrasses all have defining characteristics that you look for when make an ID. If you look at enough grass, you can generally tell what you have. Of the four main cool season turfgrasses (KBG, tall fescue, perennial rye, and fine fescue) yours definitely looks like FF the most. There are many other native grasses that can be used for turf, most of them can be identified but I am not very versed on them. There are many grass identification guides on the internet that can help you with that aspect.
