Plugs getting stuck in manual aerator?

I'm attempting to aerate my lawn, its very soft, very easy to get the prongs into, but when I pull them out, the plugs stay, then if I try sticking the prongs back into the lawn, they just stay and push everything into the soil, so its almost like a giant spike aerator. Is the soil possibly clay Is it maybe too wet or something? I live in Nevada by the way, if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Most people aerate their lawns because the soil is too hard. You're saying it is very soft. So, why are you aerating? I'm thinking your soil is too soft to aerate it. This is the first time I've ever seen a question about aerating soil that is too soft.

Regarding your clay: you can determine exactly how much of your soil is clay by doing a Jar Test. Fill a straight sided jar half full with soil and take a picture of it with a ruler standing up beside so you know how many inches you have. Then fill the jar with water and a few drops of liquid soap. Then cap the jar and shake it like crazy to "dissolve" all the soil into the water. Set the jar down and watch your clock. At 2 minutes take another picture with the ruler beside it. At 2 hours take another picture with the ruler. Then at 2 days take the last picture. From the pictures you should be able to determine the amount of sand (whatever settled out in 2 minutes), silt (whatever settled out in 2 hours), and clay (whatever is left that did not settle in 2 days). If your water over top of the soil is relatively clear after 2 days, you have no clay at all.

Thank you for telling us where you live and putting it in your profile forever. We always need that to help.
