earthworms on lawn

I just walked outside around 9pm to put stuff in my compost bin and noticed dozens upon dozens of large earthworms crawling on my lawn. Trying to catch one was difficult but not impossible. These are the huge fishing nightcrawler types. I've never noticed this in my lawn since we moved here two years ago. Is this a problem or is this normal nocturnal activity?

Very normal. Earthworms come out at night and pull bits of leaves into their burrows (hence the name nightcrawlers). Be happy you have so many, they are great aerators and composters.
